Title 1
What is Title I?
Title 1 is a federally-funded program under the Improving America's Schools Act (IASA). The purpose is to enable all children to meet high academic standards. This is accomplished by providing meaningful and challenging opportunities for student learning. Under the Title 1 legislation, schools and families form partnerships to help students who need support in meeting high academic standards. Congress has provided this financial assistance to qualifying school districts since 1965.
Targeted Assistance and Schoolwide Title I
There are two kinds of Title I programming. Children residing in an eligible school attendance area are considered for participation regardless of their family’s income. Rio Elementary School has Schoolwide Title I services.
1. Targeted Assistance schools use specific criteria to determine which students are selected to participate in Title I.
2. Schoolwide schools have 40% or more children from low-income families. The school is eligible to develop programs to serve all students. Parents and educators decide how Title I will be used in a schoolwide setting.
Family Engagement
Engaging with parents, families and communities is one important way schools can narrow gaps of opportunity or achievement and help all children learn and succeed. Family engagement is established in a variety of ways at Rio Elementary School. Please see below for a list of ways families can become involved.
Attend annual Title I meeting (This event is usually held in the Spring and will be announced in the district newsletter.)

Rio Elementary Partnership Compact
Parents will be asked to review and sign the compact with their student. The compact is an agreement between the parents, student, and school to help ensure each child’s academic success. This acknowledges a shared commitment that all involved are going to work together to improve learning. This compact is required by the Federal Title I guidelines.
